Cities are racing to mandate ‘green’ building practices

Study: 14% of U.S. cities have green building programs, and many more are about to follow suit.

Los Angeles, Dallas, Boston and Washington have mandated green standards for new commercial buildings — and even some renovations of existing buildings. Though big-city regulations get most of the attention, a new study from the American Institute of Architects found 14% of U.S. cities with a population of at least 50,000 have similar laws and dozens more are poised to follow. “The future for green design looks bright as we move toward a sustainable-built environment that would not be possible without local leadership and strong citizen involvement,” said Brooks Rainwater, director of local relations for AIA.

With oil prices skyrocketing, energy efficient ‘green’ buildings can save substantial cash by cutting down on water, heating and electric bills and increase occupancy rates, sale price and rental rates. What you probably don’t know is that your commercial building could be eligible for a substantial Federal tax deduction.
